As humans, we are constantly pursuing something. The pursuit of happiness, the pursuit of liberty, the pursuit of life. Those are the basics, the essentials. Though none are easy to accomplish, and are never guaranteed, they are what make our life worth living. They are the "simple things:" love, friends, family, laughter. The trending topics that appear time and time again. At 22 years young, I understand the importance of these key elements in my life, though I don't feel as though I'm old enough to appreciate them. For they are things that can only be found in the wisdom of age. They are the kind of ideas that are born from the kiss of a soulmate, the cry of a newborn, the laugh lines that form over the years. At 22, the pursuit has just begun. It has peaked its head out into the morning sun and whispered, "good morning," still curious and a bit timid as to what the world has to offer. The pursuit is there, sitting on our shoulders. It is witnessing tassels turn, new jobs begin, and dreams catch fire. It is waiting until the day that we may become old enough and brave enough to pursue the pure essentials. To stick out our necks and shout our hellos, and introduce ourselves to the world. Until these days come, and the "simple things" are acheived, we pursue the ideas that will make us who we are. We will pursue the frivilous things in life: the cities we can't afford, the shoes that hurt our feet, the colors that are a little bit too impractical. We will pursue boyfriends that aren't right for us, jobs that bore us to tears, and apartments barely large enough to do a spin. But these things that we pursue, they will be ours. They will become a map of who we are and what we will become. A pair of shoes may seem like an insignificant purchase, but suppose they are the uncomfortable shoes we are wearing when our husband first smiles at us from across the room. The perfect, impractical color of pink that catches a wandering eye. The impractically small apartment that sparks a move that changes a life. The expensive chair we "had to have" where we are sitting the first time our baby kicks. All the insignificant, frivilous, beautiful things that we pursue in our 20's help us become exactly who we were meant to be. It's the fabulous and frivilous that eventually equate into the simple. The pursuit of fabulous has officially begun. Enjoy the ride.
